Dating With Intention: How to Find a Lasting Relationship in India
Most advice about dating is written for people who want to have fun. This is for people who want to find someone to build a life with. It is practical, it is honest, and it works whichever app, introduction or coffee table it begins at.
1. Start by knowing what you actually want
“Looking for a serious relationship” is not enough. Before you say hello to anyone, spend ten quiet minutes on three questions. What kind of life do I want in five years? What do I need from a partner, and what can I live without? Is my timeline fixed or open?
People who can answer those questions find it easier to recognise the right person, and to walk away from the wrong one early and kindly.
2. Say it plainly, from the first line
The most common reason serious dating goes wrong is not incompatibility. It is silence: two people each hoping the other wants the same thing, and neither saying so. Put your goal on your profile in plain words: marriage, a long-term relationship, a life partnership, or still deciding. Honesty filters out mismatches quickly, which is a favour to everyone.
3. Write a profile that sounds like a person
- Use a recent, clear photo. One where you look like yourself on an ordinary good day.
- Be specific. “I love travelling” says little. “I will happily drive three hours for a good filter coffee” gives someone something to reply to.
- Say what you value. Kindness, ambition, family, humour: whichever matters most to you, name it.
4. Move at a human pace
Swiping rewards speed. Lasting relationships reward attention. Write one thoughtful message rather than ten identical ones. Ask a question that cannot be answered with “yes”. If you feel shy about starting, that is common, and a simple opener based on something in their profile is usually enough.
5. Take family and culture seriously, without letting them decide for you
In India, a relationship is rarely only between two people. Think early about how and when you will involve family, and be open with your partner about what yours expects. It is easier to talk about this in the first few weeks than after you have both grown attached.
6. Pay attention to what actions say
Someone serious will be consistent, will make time, will be willing to talk on video before meeting, and will respect a “not yet”. Be cautious about anyone who pushes to move to another app straight away, avoids a video call, or talks about money. No genuine person looking for a partner will ask you for a loan or an investment tip.
7. Meet safely, then meet well
- Meet in a public place the first few times.
- Tell a friend or family member where you are going and when you will be back.
- Arrange your own transport.
- Trust your instincts over any badge or verification mark. A verified badge confirms a check was made; it does not vouch for someone’s character.
8. Know when to stop, and when to stay
Not every conversation will go anywhere, and that is not a failure. If you feel respected, curious and calm, stay. If you feel anxious, pressured or constantly second-guessing, that is information too. Kind, clear endings are part of dating well.
