How to Write a Dating Profile That Sounds Like You
Your profile has one job: to help the right person feel they would enjoy talking to you. It does not need to impress everyone. It needs to be true, specific and warm.
Start with the photo
- Use a recent, clear photo where your face is easy to see.
- Choose one where you look like yourself on a good ordinary day, not a heavily edited or very old picture.
- Avoid group photos as your main picture. People should not have to guess which one is you.
- Natural light is kinder than any filter.
Say what you are looking for, plainly
If you want marriage, say so. If you want a long-term relationship, or you are still deciding, say that. Clear intentions save everyone time and attract people who want the same thing. Being honest is not being desperate; it is being respectful.
Be specific, not generic
Generic lines tell the reader nothing. Specific ones give them something to reply to.
| Instead of | Try |
|---|---|
| “I love travelling.” | “I will happily drive three hours for a good filter coffee and a quiet view.” |
| “I am a simple person.” | “I like early mornings, home-cooked food and calling my mother on Sundays.” |
| “Looking for someone genuine.” | “I value kindness and honesty. I would rather be told the truth gently than be flattered.” |
| “I like movies and music.” | “I can quote old Hindi film songs and will not apologise for it.” |
Name your values
Kindness, family, ambition, humour, faith, independence: whichever matter most to you, say them. Shared values predict a lasting relationship far better than shared hobbies, and they give someone a reason to write to you.
Keep it positive
Lists of what you do not want read as tired or guarded. Describe what you want instead: “I am looking for someone who is steady, curious and kind” works better than “No drama, no games, no time-wasters.”
Check your profile like a stranger
- Is my relationship goal clear in the first few lines?
- Would a stranger know three specific things about me?
- Does it sound like how I actually talk?
- Is everything true, including my age and situation?
