What to Say in a First Message: 12 Openers That Work
The first message decides whether a conversation starts at all. The good news: it does not need to be clever. It needs to be specific, kind and easy to answer.
What a good first message does
A good opener does three things. It shows you read their profile, it asks something they can answer in a sentence, and it sounds like you. “Hi” and “How are you?” do none of these, which is why they are so often ignored.
Twelve openers you can adapt
Replace the bracketed part with something real from their profile.
- “You mentioned [a place]. What is the one thing everyone should do there?”
- “Your answer about [a value] stayed with me. What made it matter to you?”
- “I see you cook. What is the dish you make when you want to impress someone?”
- “Filter coffee or chai? Be honest, I will not judge. Much.”
- “You wrote that your ideal weekend is [thing]. I would add a long breakfast. Would you?”
- “We both like [hobby]. How did you get into it?”
- “I noticed we both want [relationship goal]. What does a good week in that life look like for you?”
- “Your profile made me smile, especially [detail]. Is there a story behind it?”
- “If you could live in any city for a year, which one?”
- “What is a small thing that reliably makes your day better?”
- “I am a little shy at the start, so I will begin with an easy one: best film you have seen recently?”
- “I liked your photo at [place]. Was that a good trip?”
What to avoid
- Copy-pasted lines. People can tell, and mass messaging is not allowed on YoursVow anyway.
- Comments only about looks. A compliment is fine; leading with one is not memorable.
- Questions about money, income or family property. Those come much later, if at all.
- Pushing to another app straight away. Take it at a comfortable pace.
Keeping it going
Answer their question, then ask one of your own. Share a small detail, not a life story. If the conversation flows for a few days, suggest a short video call before meeting. If they go quiet, one gentle follow-up is enough. Silence is also an answer.
